There is no better tool for events and reminders than native mobile apps because of one characteristic, we are almost never without our phones! Whether it's email or surfing the net, people are always using their mobile devices, so what better way to keep your prospective students informed of upcoming events and deadlines?
Not a necessary feature, but it does add some fun and interactivity to your mobile app. Done correctly, you can even use it as a tool to gain valuable feedback from your prospects. Poll your users on what they like best and least about your school, ask them to review thier campus visit, ask them what you can do better.
